I honestly don’t know where to start writing this. The idea is stuck somewhere in my head but putting it down on paper is like sitting for Maths exams. Ok…..here we go!!! As a teenager cum younger girl, I wasn’t keen on make up. I was not your regular kind of girl who experiments with make up or dressing up. I hated pink and frilly dresses or hairstyle; I still do. I hated making my hair, didn’t make it at all from birth till after secondary school. Infact, there was a period in my life that I didn’t have a single skirt. I bought my first make up last year. And no, I was not a tomboy.
This morning while performing my daily ritual, it just occurred to me that I’ve changed from that young girl. I have a cream for my eyes, one for my face, another for my body and a different one for my feet. Don’t roll your eyes yet!!!!! Permit me to say none is for either toning or bleaching. Am I vain to use four different creams for my 5’3 frame? My husband, Tunde always says I’m 5’2….he knows not what he says!!!! Am I just being a normal girl? Or have I misplaced my priorities?
Some weeks back, a Mary Kay representative wanted to sell me this eye make up. Typical me, I wittingly declined, I know my limits. I use make up now but only on Sundays or when I have a party to attend, never in between. Now, the reason I use all these creams is not because I particularly fancy myself….far from it. I am in my 30s and although people say I look younger than my age, I deceive myself not. My birth certificate testifies to it that I wasn’t born in the 80s.
Olympics is going on in the UK at the moment but the preparation had been underway for the last 7 years!!!! The Olympic village is a stone throw from my house and it is massive. I can’t help but compare Nigeria with the UK. Let’s take 2015 for instance when we will be changing the batons of our elected political officers. What measures have been put in place by the government to ensure the elections are free and fair? What measures have been put in place by the populace that we vote out the sitting ducks? I know we rant. I know we criticise on social media. I know we believe they are just looting. However, what are you doing about it? Are you a card carrying member of a political party if you know you have something positive to contribute? Are you enlightening your neighbourhood about the importance of change? Are you educating the people around you so that they can make an informed decision when the time comes to vote?
We cry that the Super Eagles are just Southern fried chicken. They have not made the desired impact that they were known for in the 90s. How can we expect a different result when we still do the same thing? That is the definition of lunacy! What adequate preparations are in place for the Nations Cup and the World Cup? We have a fire brigade approach to things as against adequate preparations with measures in place. We specialise in fighting fires instead of preventing it.
I walk at least an hour daily to tone up my muscles. I’d rather the creams and exercise to take care of myself than succumb to drastic measures of heavy make up to hide sunken eyes, flabby flesh, crow feet and blemishes. I’d rather prevention than cure.
Online shopping beckons, Tesco is selling my eye cream for half price.
